Back to Blogging

It’s been awhile since I have tried to blog regularly, but I think I am finally ready to give it a go again.

About 8 months ago there were 50+ bloggers typing away vigorously as they attempted to write 31 blog posts within the month for Blaugust, turns out I actually completed the challenge, and then subsequently fell off the face of the earth (read: stared at the WordPress editor for a month and then started school again). I never did a proper reflective piece on Blaugust, and I won’t do one now, but I did really enjoy it.

What I want to do is thank Belghast for putting the event together and congratulate all the participants. Also, I never got to show off this nifty badge Belghast made for everyone who completed all 31 posts.

One more thing. I need closure, because…

100 Noses

In April of 2015, I decided one of the firsts things I wanted to focus on as I practice and improve my drawing was the human head. It was during Blaugust that I started posting my progress on this project starting with drawing 100 noses. And while it took longer than I wanted, I drew the last one on New Year’s Eve. I haven’t decided what my next “100…” project is going to be, right now I am thinking eyes.

Back to Blogging

Coming out of Blaugust I didn’t have a plan for when to write, and I started to question what I wanted to blog about.

I don’t think a month, or really a week has gone by since August where I haven’t told myself I should start blogging again, and I often found myself fiddling around with the blog or staring at the WordPress Editor. I even started writing a few posts, but as you can see nothing materialized.

I suppose the logical question is what changed to make me start blogging again. There are a few reasons chief among them being I have a little more time right now as I am in a transition period as I recently completed my undergraduate education. The second reason is I need something to help focus my gaming and drawing because my efforts in both are feeling a bit scattered.

So, the plan is to post at least once a week, with the focus being MMORPGs, drawing, both, or something else entirely.

A Quick Update

It’s been nearly 6 months since I’ve made a proper post, and while this blog has been severely neglected it has not been abandoned.

I’m currently finishing my last term required to get my bachelor’s degree. I have 3 weeks left…3 weeks…I have to keep reminding myself because it feels unreal, but at the same time I will be so relieved to be done.

I’m trying to focus on the next 3 weeks, nothing beyond that. Let me get through the anxiety, the near burnout, the research paper, the finals, and the waning motivation–then I’ll think about what my next steps are.

3 weeks, they’ll be over before I know it…see you then.

Blaugust is Over. Let’s Talk About it Later.

Blaugust Day 31

The last day of Blaugust is upon us. I am not sure if August went by so fast because of Blaugust, but this month has flown by. I plan on doing a reflective piece on Blaugust, but I will save that for later this week once I’ve had some time to mull it over.

For this last post, I want to quickly review my August Goals and Gamer To-Do List.

August Goals

I finished both Earth One and Battling Boy earlier this month, and started A Thousand Splendid Suns just the other day. So, I was successful in reading what I planned. I attempted to fix the Wii but when I tried to access the bottom I ran into triwing screws and didn’t have a screwdriver that could fit well enough to unscrew them. For some reason, I haven’t bought a trwing screwdriver online yet. Eventually. This month I also wanted to organize my bookshelf, start building a desk, and get more acquainted with windows 10, I did not get to any of this. I did mess with windows 10 a little more, but not enough to write about or feel satisified with.

As far as the blog goes I did get a Contact page put together that I am happy with for the time being. Unfortunately, I did not get to the blogroll or about pages, but both of these are high on my to-do list for September. Blaugust has definitely shaken some things loose in the ole noggin and given me a lot of things to think about when it comes to what I want this blog to be.

The Gamer To-Do List

In RuneScape I got 92 cooking, and tried Dominion Tower. Well, I attempted to try Dominion Tower. If I would have done a little more research earlier this month I would have realized I didn’t meet all the requirements to access it. To access the tower you need to have completed at least 20 quests from the list of quests that have bosses you can refight- I’ve only completed 15. Although I could not access the full minigame I was able to fight an easy version of a boss designed by the community at Runefest 2011. The third item on my list for RuneScape was to try Player-Owned Ports and I didn’t get a chance to try it, maybe in September.

After the release date for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns was announced I have had a renewed vigor to get in the game. So last week I completed Part V of the personal story which was all about protecting quaggan, and today I got lvl 60. I also originally planned to complete the Gendarran Fields map, but instead I was mostly focused on clearing Dredgehaunt Cliffs since that was where my personal story was taking place.

This wouldn’t be a very good end of Blaugust post without saying that the Blaugust community has been amazing. Congratulations to anyone that wrote any amount of posts for Blaugust!

Quick Note: I think I finally found a mobile browser that will play nice when logged into wordpress, so many of you can look forward to -in the words of Murf- “Likeageddon” as I still plan on reading everyone’s Blaugust posts.

The Final Week of Blaugust

Blaugust Day 24

During this last week of Blaugust (yes, one week to go) I will be posting about how I plan to tackle fall term as it starts in about a month for me. I don’t know if this will be one post or multiple posts- we’ll see. I do plan on posting about more than studying. I’m hoping to get in some more about SWTOR, drawing (I haven’t had a post dedicated to my own drawings since August 8- yikes), and I need to get back to my story The Great Blaugust Sea before Blaugust is over. And, somehow I have managed to go all of Blaugust without talking about playing my main games RuneScape and Guild Wars 2, except for mentioning some goals I had for each during the month.

Anyway, prior to fall term and during fall term I want to make some posts that have a more academic focus, but I haven’t decided whether I want to post those here or over on Tumblr. At the moment my blog feels very much like a place to talk about my hobbies, and I really can’t decide if I want to inject academia into that or keep those two worlds separate. Part of me says yes, and part of me says no.

In the beginning the posts I plan on making will likely focus on the changes I am making to studying habits, and then will transition to a summary of what I have learned during that week of studying or classes. I know there are a lot of differing opinions on having two blogs vs one blog. There are good arguments for both sides, and I plan to be having many internal debates about the subject throughout this final week of Blaugust.

Halfway There

Blaugust Day 15

The halfway point is here. Time to reflect a little.

Blogging and writing every day has been good. Even when I have been unsure what to talk about I’ve been able to work through it. The main thing I need to work on is giving myself more time to write. The hard part of Blaugust has been keeping up with all the other participants. I love seeing my feed reader full and always having something new to read. I’m curious how other people have been consuming Blaugust. I would like to be reading everyone’s posts on the day they post them, but instead I have been reading one blog at a time and trying to catch-up on that one blog and then move on to the next.

The problem I have been running into is that if I don’t feel like I am going to have the time or if there is a chance of interruption I end up reading nothing. I’ve got to push past this though and just read. I feel better and more inspired when I am reading other people’s blogs, liking their posts, and leaving comments.

I’m excited for what the rest of Blaugust holds. There are so many good writing prompts and topics people have touched on so far I’m not really worried about getting those next 16 posts out.

Everyday Matters Catch-Up Day 4 & 5 and a Question

Blaugust Day 7

If you’re not familiar with the Everyday Matters Challenge check out my first post here

EDM Day 4&5
EDM Day 4: Draw your mug or cup

During a family trip as I child we went to Little America Wyoming where I got this mug. As I kid I loved dinosaurs, and still do, so this Dino Drink was a must have. What I remember best about that trip was some pretty fantastic orange juice, and eating my first bison burger which also tasted great. I remember this trip fondly, and have always wanted to go back to Little America…maybe one day.

EDM Day 5: Draw your bed

Not much to say here really. To the right of my bed is some driftwood. In front of my legs in the sketch are my erasers, pen, and sketchbook. This sketch could have used some more work from the perspective to the folds, and values. It’s a good sketch to look at to remind myself of what I need to continue to work on.

A Question

When you have a topic you want to write about, but don’t feel like you have figured out exactly what you want to say- what do you do? Do you write down your ideas and save it as a draft so that you can come back later to polish it up when your ideas and thoughts are more concrete? Do you write what you have at the moment, hit publish, and revisit the topic later with a new post when you have new or more refined thoughts about it?

I have a few things I want to write about, but at the moment none of them feel like they are fully realized ideas. Maybe I need to start writing and see how far my mind can go with them. Since this is Blaugust I may roll with a few of them and revisit them in the future after my brain has had time to ruminate and contemplate.

Blaugust is Here

Blaugust Day 1

Today is the first day of Blaugust, a challenge started by Belghast over at Tales of the Aggronaut inviting bloggers to write 31 posts during the month of August. It doesn’t matter if you blog about games, drawing, books, life, or just stuff- everyone is welcome to join in.

I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to start off Blaugust with, but luckily Belghast posted a writing prompt that will act as a great way to start things off. (Throughout Blaugust you will be able to find writing prompts over on the 2015 Writing Prompts thread posted on Anook. These prompts aren’t required, they’re just a way to get those fingers moving if you don’t know what to write about. Void from A Green Mushroom has already posted a bunch of great prompts to get you started.)

What are you hoping to get out of Blaugust this year?

I’ll start off with what I have already got out of Blaugust this year, and that is the successful launch of this blog. Mustering up the courage to start a blog has been something I’ve been struggling with for awhile now, but with all the buzz around twitter and across the blogosphere about Blaugust I finally decided it was time to stop making excuses and just dive in.

When a challenge awaits face it head on. Chances are you’re more capable than you think, and most of the time it doesn’t even require pants.

Now for what I hope to gain. Over the years I have struggled with writing, it has become something I loathe. This is mostly because it seems to take me an eternity to form and organize my ideas into something coherent enough that I feel comfortable writing it down. I sit there in my chair or on the couch and think for more time than I care to admit. Eventually, I come to a point where I have written out most of what I am going to write in my head and I can finally put pen to paper. I want to move past this aversion to writing, and just let the words flow while still being mindful and deliberate about what I am saying. There was a time when I enjoyed writing. I fondly remember concocting stories of evil care bears, giant cockroaches attacking band kids, carrots traveling to Mars, and battling Bigfoot with Nerf guns.

So maybe I don’t want to be telling the same kind of stories as I was in Middle School, but I do want to enjoy writing again.

During Blaugust, I also hope to connect with the great, vibrant, and thriving community of bloggers out there. For the past year, I have discovered so many great blogs written by thoughtful, interesting, and creative people. It’s time to step beyond lurking reading, and start interacting with the authors of the blogs I enjoy and the new ones I discover thanks to Blaugust.

Lastly, I leave you with a challenge I have set for myself during Blaugust, and that is to read every post written by my fellow Blaugustians. Sure, my eyes may rebel and I may fall asleep and drool all over your post but it will be worth it, right? Right!?

Goodluck my fellow Blaugustians, it should be a fun ride.
